The strategy itself is quite simple and somewhat similar to the Martingale system. In this case after each loss, the player has to increase the bet with one unit. Another method is to decrease the amount of the wager by one unit after each win. It does not matter which one you use, it is the same system. Compared to this, the Martingale system says that the player should double the amount of a bet after each loss. As you can see, the D’Alembert betting system is not as aggressive as the Martingale system, so it bares smaller risks.

It is often said that the biggest risk of the D’Alembert system is that after a long losing streak the player would run out of money and will not be able to increase the bet with one unit. However, this is not likely to happen, since the player has to increase the bet with only one unit after each loss, so it is not likely that the player will not win eventually. Another potential risk of the D’Alembert system is that the player might reach the table limit after a long losing strike. This is more likely to happen than the previous strategy, but statistically speaking this too has a very small chance to happen.

The previously described potential events are not likely to happen mainly because this strategy is not as aggressive as the Martingale system, and it take a longer while for a player to lose all his money or to reach the table limit.

Let us take an example! Let us say that the player starts the bet with $1. In case he wins, the next bet will be $2, the third bet $3 and so on. Just imagine how many you have to lose to reach a $50 bet! It is much more likely that in the meantime you will win and recover all your previous losses. This again proves that the D’Alembert strategy works on the short term and with somewhat smaller bets.

Overall, the D’Alembert system has both advantages and disadvantages: its advantage is that it is very easy, even beginners can try it out, while the disadvantages might show themselves during a very long streak of loss, where the player might lose all his money or reach the table limit, thus being impossible to raise the stake by one unit.
